COWS Wrangler Ride Near Sayner, WI

Seven tandem teams from the Couples-on-Wheels tandem club gathered near Sayner, WI for another exciting Wrangler Ride. Our host couple for this ride was Annette and Tom Esser and they did an excellent job making us all feel welcome in their neighborhood.

Dennis and I were grateful to have spent Friday night at the Laabs’ cabin near Withee, WI which made our Saturday morning journey much shorter. We stopped at a truck stop in Merrill for breakfast and after being seated were recognized by Linda and Glen Gilbert also travelling to Sayner for the ride.




Our starting point was to be at the Mel and Emma Long Memorial Park which had a shelter with changing area so we could all prepare ourselves for the ride. As soon as we entered the parking area, 5 more vehicles with tandems showed up instantaneously. It was amazing to experience the promptness of this group. We gathered for a brief meet and greet and Annette and Tom went over a few route notes. We then saddled up and began biking the beautiful northwoods of Wisconsin. The ratio of low riders (recumbents) to uprights (wedgie riders) was 3.5:3.5—a pretty balanced group. Glen and Linda helped even the playing field with their ½ recumbent and ½ upright bike.

Our lunch stop was planned in Boulder Junction at the Outdoorsman Restaurant where our group was offered the screened patio for our gathering. The food was good and the conversation even better.

Back on the bikes, we pedaled around Trout Lake (awesome views) and towards snacks and Esser’s Best Beer awaiting us at the Memorial Park. We had a great time visiting and getting to know the teams that journeyed north on this beautiful August day.
