Tri-State Ride Day #1

McGregor, IA to Potosi, WI: 60.76 miles
Comments: Ride Time was 5 hours 30 minutes, average speed: 11.0

Today we began our ride in pouring rain. We suited up in our yellow rain gear and began pedaling out of McGregor around 7:30 a.m. Our plan was to stop in town at the Kwik Star for a banana to get us down the road before stopping for breakfast. After losing our spare sandals and backtracking to find them, we made it to the Kwik Star store just as it was being announced that they lost their power and could not make any sales. We continued on towards Prairie du Chien looking for a restaurant called Huckleberry’s. Gary from Iowa was just pedaling in as we were parking our bike at the restaurant so we made our breakfast seating request for three. Gary was an experienced Shuttleguy Tour traveler and very interesting to talk to.
Following breakfast, we biked towards Casseville, WI where we planned to have lunch. The rain was interfering some with our travel plans and we stopped little on the way reaching Casseville for an early lunch at the Town Pump & Grill. Many Tri-State riders were already huddled inside having lunch. As we were leaving the Town Pump, the rain finally stopped and we were able to crawl out of our rain gear for the rest of today’s ride.
We were relieved to see the Potosi welcome sign but never expected the long climb to find our tent. We had been climbing hills all through the day and battling the rain so we expected a gentle ride to the finish—the challenge continues!
Our camp site was all set up for us with dry towels and a fresh mint placed in our tent. We headed directly for the showers and boy did that feel refreshing! We were now ready to party and Rick and the staff planned to shuttle us all down to the Potosi Brewery for drinks and a fabulous lasagna supper put on by the Brewery’s very cheerful cook. We were served salad, lasagna, garlic toast, cookies and beer. We dined with Gloria, Marshall, Steve, Linda and Bob and then were shuttled back up the hill to our camp site at the Potosi High School. We were lulled to sleep again by the sound of raindrops on our tent top.
